Radio Interview on CBC: WHO sugar guidelines

Click on the link below to hear about the new WHO sugar guidelines. Skip to 1:29:53 for my interview:

Main points from the interview:

  • Limit intake of "free sugars" (sugar, syrups, and fruit juice concentrates added to food)
  • Include less than 10% of calories of free sugar per day (which equals 12 tsp of sugar)
  • Sugar present in fresh fruit, milk, or plain yogurt is okay (and does not need to be limited)
  • Ways to reduce free sugar:
    (1) Avoid sugary drinks and drink water instead
    (2) Read ingredient lists for free sugars and avoid products with these sugars (e.g. cane sugar, glucose, fructose, malt syrup, corn syrup, agave, molasses, honey, etc.)
